Adventurous Training
Around 15000 individuals from 2nd Division are actively involved in Adventurous Training each year. This includes Regular Soldiers, Reserve Forces, University Officer Training Corps and youngsters from the Army and Combined Cadet Forces.
Two Joint Service Mountain Training Centres operate within the Division boundaries and the Army Cadets have two "Centres of Excellence" conducting skills training and instructor courses for their own personnel. Numerous exercises and expeditions are planned and executed each year by 2nd Division units ranging from walking the West Highland Way to topping out on Mount Everest.
Of particular note are the Everest West Ridge expedition, the Ski Mountaineering expedition to the 8000m peak of Shisha Pangma and the most remarkable unsupported Crossing of The Greenland Ice Cap in a record 25 days, all of which were planned and executed by 2nd Division soldiers.
Adventurous Training is a valuable addition to formal military training, helping support the values and standards of the British Army. When properly conducted it enhances an individual's ability to withstand the rigours of operations and rapid deployment.
It also develops environmental awareness and provides the opportunity for servicemen to take part in the conduct of expeditions in the UK and all over the world. As such, Adventurous Training is recognised as a key training activity.
Headquarters Adventurous Training Group (Army) is the focus for all Adventurous Training conducted by Army personnel at Adventurous Training Centres, on Overseas Training Exercises and on Expeditions. Their website provides information of courses at Joint Service Adventurous Training Centres, Post Exercise Reports, access to Adventurous Training related publications and details of how to apply for authority to conduct Adventurous Training Exercises.
There is also a notice board where exercise leaders can post requests for assistance and instructors can advertise their availability. It is an essential source of information for anybody planning an Adventurous Training Exercise.
In addition the Physical and Adventurous Training Department at Headquarters 2nd Division are responsible for the scrutiny and approval of all Adventurous Training planned and conducted by units located within the Division's area of responsibility and the staff are always willing to give guidance and advice about expedition planning and any other Adventurous Training related issue.
