Guide to RSS

Using RSS in Internet Explorer

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can subscribe and view feeds on the Feeds tab in the Favorites Center.

What is RSS?

RSS ("Really Simple Syndication") is a web feed format for delivering frequently updated web content, such as news and blogs.

Why use RSS feeds?

RSS feeds allow you to see when websites you are interested in have added new content. You can get the latest headlines in one place, as soon as it is published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from or subscribe to email new letters.

What do I need to read an RSS Feed?

You will need RSS reader software. This checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added.

There are many different RSS readers, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.

Browser-based readers let you read your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable readers download them in the same way as you do with your email.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can view feeds you have subscribed to on the Feeds tab in the Favorites Center.

How do I start using RSS feeds?

You can subscribe to a feed by:

  • entering the feed's URL into the RSS reader,
  • clicking the RSS link in a web browser - many sites display these labeled as RSS, XML or RDF.

The RSS reader checks the feeds you have subscribed to regularly and downloads any updates.
